Remove Background Noise from Audio and Video — Room Echo Included

Your recording comes back with the fan, traffic, wind and room echo gone and the voice as it was — MP4 for a video, 48 kHz WAV for audio — at the noise-reduction level you set.

What Is a Background Noise Remover?

A background noise remover is an AI speech enhancement tool that lets you remove background noise — hum, fans, traffic, wind, barking — from audio and video while keeping the voice. Vocal Isolator's background noise remover runs NVIDIA's RE-USE model, which also reduces room echo; you set how much noise goes, and videos download as MP4, audio as a 48 kHz, 16-bit WAV.

How Do I Hear the Difference Before I Download?

Press play on a real noisy clip below, then switch between Original and Cleaned. The video keeps running, so you hear the same words with and without the noise. Your own file works the same way: upload it, and the first 30 seconds are cleaned free so you can remove background noise from a short piece before you pay for the whole file.

Same clip, same voice level. Only the noise changes.

Two men talk outdoors on a windy day, filmed on a phone. The cleaned version removes the wind on the mic and keeps both voices at the same level. Video: Parker Mitchell, CC BY. Watch it as one video: original sound, then cleaned.
  • The gaps between wordsPauses should go quiet once you remove background noise, instead of filling with hiss, wind, or engine rumble.
  • The edges of wordsSoft endings such as "s" and "t" should stay crisp, not cut off or watery.
  • The roomA hollow, echoey room should sound closer, as if the speaker moved toward the mic.

We scored 24 real noisy recordings with DNSMOS, a speech quality model from Microsoft that rates audio from 1 (bad) to 5 (excellent), before and after we remove background noise. Six are below, including one where it barely helps; play any of them to hear the original and the cleaned version.

Why Doesn't a Noise Gate or EQ Remove Background Noise?

A noisy recording is hard to listen to for a simple reason: the noise plays at the same time as the words. A noise gate only mutes the pauses, so the fan or the traffic comes right back every time someone speaks. EQ cuts whole frequency bands, and most everyday noise shares those bands with the human voice, so cutting it dulls the speech too.

Classic noise reduction, like Audacity's Noise Reduction effect, learns one noise profile from a silent moment. It works on steady hiss and hum, but barking, passing cars, and clattering dishes change every second. To remove background noise that moves, you need a model that knows what speech sounds like and keeps only that.

Why Use This Background Noise Remover?

Video in, MP4 out

Upload an MP4, MOV, or other video to remove background noise and download an MP4 with the same picture and a clean soundtrack. You never export the audio and line it back up in an editor.

Set how much noise goes

A Noise reduction slider lets you keep a little of the room for a natural sound, or remove background noise completely. The download uses the level you set.

Voice polish and auto level

Turn on Voice polish for studio-style EQ and gentle compression, and the volume is leveled automatically, so a quiet phone recording comes out at a steady, comfortable loudness.

Big files, any device

Upload files up to 2 GB from Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone, or Android. The AI runs on cloud GPUs, so you can remove background noise with nothing to install and no graphics card.

Why Does the Voice Still Sound Like You?

A speech model, not a filter

The background noise remover runs NVIDIA's RE-USE speech enhancement model, which is trained on speech to keep the voice and drop everything else instead of carving frequencies out of it. When you remove background noise this way, tone and accent stay, and room echo is reduced along with the noise.

Stereo stays stereo

A stereo camera mic keeps its left and right balance when you remove background noise, so voices do not wander between speakers. An interview recorded on two mics is cleaned side by side, which also removes most of each mic's bleed from the other person.

What Background Noise Can It Remove?

The tool keeps speech and can remove background noise that is not a voice. These are the noises it handled well on real recordings we tested, plus room echo, which the same model reduces.

Background noise the tool removes from speech
NoiseExamples
Steady machine noiseFans, air conditioners, dishwashers, copiers
Outdoor noiseWind on the mic, traffic, street wash, a passing car
Home noiseDogs barking, babies, dishes and utensils, doors, scrubbing
Mouth noiseBreathing, chewing, and crunching close to the mic
Desk noiseMouse clicks and a creaking chair
Room echoThe hollow sound of a bare room, a hallway, or a large hall

What Files Can I Upload?

You can remove background noise from most audio and video files without converting them first.

How to Remove Background Noise from a Video

To remove background noise from a video, follow four steps from the upload to an MP4 with a clean voice.

  1. 1Upload your video.Drop an MP4, MOV, M4V, WEBM, or MKV file up to 2 GB; there is no need to extract the audio.
  2. 2Preview the result free.AI cleans the first 30 seconds so you can compare the original and the cleaned voice before you pay.
  3. 3Adjust the sound.Set the noise reduction level, turn on Voice polish, and trim the part you need.
  4. 4Download the MP4.Process the full file and download the video with the background noise removed, or just its audio as WAV.

How to Remove Background Noise from Audio

The same steps remove background noise from audio files: MP3, WAV, M4A, and other recordings come back as WAV with the voice kept and the noise gone.

Podcasts and interviews

Upload an episode or a guest track recorded in a noisy room or over a laptop mic. Remove background noise from the whole file, then trim the part you need before you download.

Voice memos and lectures

A phone memo, a lecture, or a voicemail is easier to follow, and easier for transcription apps to read, once the fan, the traffic, and the hall echo are gone.

Who Uses an Online Background Noise Remover?

Vloggers filming outside

You shot a vlog on a windy beach or a busy street and the mic picked up everything. Upload the MP4 and remove background noise before you edit or post.

Result: the same video with wind and traffic removed from the voice.

Podcasters recording at home

A guest recorded on a laptop next to a fan, a dog, or a kitchen. Upload their track to the background noise remover and turn on Voice polish.

Result: a clean WAV that matches the rest of the episode.

Teachers and course creators

A lecture recorded in a large classroom echoes and hums. Remove background noise and room echo so students hear every word.

Result: a clearer lecture video or audio file, ready to upload.

Remove Background Noise FAQ

Upload the video file, up to 2 GB, and preview the first 30 seconds free. If it sounds right, process the full file and download an MP4 with the same picture and the background noise removed.

You can preview the first 30 seconds of any file free, without an account. After you sign in, your first 1 minute of downloads is free. Longer files use minutes from a minute pack or a monthly plan.

The free preview of the first 30 seconds is usually ready in about 40 seconds, most of it spent cleaning on a cloud GPU. A full file takes longer the longer it is. You can close the page while it runs: full files finish on the server and appear under Your files on this page for 24 hours.

Usually not. The model used to remove background noise is trained to keep speech rather than filter frequencies. Very loud noise right on top of a quiet voice can leave a slightly thin sound. If it does, lower the Noise reduction slider so a little of the room comes back.

Yes. When you remove background noise, the same model also reduces room reverb, so a bare room or a hall sounds closer and drier.

Partly. The noise model keeps speech and lowers most other sounds, but music with singing can stay. To take music out from under dialogue, use the background music remover.
